Going Toe-to-Toe with Foot Pain
Dr. Marieli Colon talks about foot pain, written by Jordan Rachael Williams.
Most people don’t think about their feet very often — unless there’s a problem. Even then, many aren’t sure where to get treatment for foot problems, whether it’s an ingrown toenail, athlete’s foot, or a stress fracture. As a result, issues often worsen until they’re impossible to ignore. It’s a struggle Dr. Marieli Colon sees frequently at American Foot and Leg Specialists in Fayetteville and one she’s dedicated to helping resolve.
“When your feet hurt, your whole body hurts,” says Dr. Colon. “Feet hold up the whole body, and even a minor foot problem can limit mobility and make it hard to do daily activities. Frequently, foot problems can be fixed in a single appointment! I love that so many hurting patients walk out of my office pain-free. I really enjoy what I do.”
Dr. Colon, who is fluent in English and Spanish, was born and raised in Puerto Rico. After earning her bachelor’s degree from the University of Puerto Rico, she studied medicine at Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla. She completed her residency in podiatric medicine and surgery at Sacred Heart Hospital in Chicago, and now she keeps Fayette County running (and walking) without pain. American Foot & Leg treats a wide range of issues from injuries such as sprains and fractures to conditions such as arthritis and diabetes. They perform a variety of procedures including hot and cold laser therapy, wound care, and foot and ankle surgery. Their number-one focus is getting patients back to health.
“Everyone at our practice treats patients the way we would treat our family members,” she says. “The practice was established 40 years ago, and I’ve been part of it for 11 years. We’re like a family, and we try to treat patients the same way.”
