Prevent Toenail Fungus
Spring and Summer means sandals and bare feet. The last thing you want is nasty nails that you’re afraid for anyone to see. Here are some important ways to prevent fungus from infecting your toe nails.
Wear the right socks and give your feet a break.
You can now find synthetic socks that are designed to get rid of any moisture and keep your feet drier than, say cotton and wool socks do. If you sweat often, change your socks often. When you’re at home, go without socks and shoes, giving your feet a chance to breathe. Also, strip the shoes and socks off quickly after a workout. Shoes make a difference in preventing toenail fungus as well. Alternate close-toed and open-toed shoes to allow your feet some oxygen every now and then.
Keep your nails well-groomed and dry.
It’s wise to keep your nails fairly short. Trim nails straight across and file down thickened areas. Thoroughly dry your hands and feet, including between your toes, after bathing. Follow your shower and towel dry with a sprinkle of an antifungal powder.
Don't go barefoot in public places.
This one should be common sense. Whenever you’re out in public, wear your shoes… especially at the gym .The locker room and shower area is a breeding ground for unwanted germs that can cause toenail fungus.
Be Choosy when Picking a Nail Salon.
Don’t worry about upsetting or offending the staff. Ask them how and how often they sterilize their materials. Be picky. Your toes will look a lot better after the fact if you are.
Toenail fungus is an unsightly problem, but it is treatable. The key is not ignoring or covering up the problem. You may be able to try some over-the-counter remedies that work; however the best thing to do is see a doctor as soon as you may first suspect that something’s not right. It’s amazing to see how long some patients go before having a doctor check things out. Treating the toenail fungus before it spreads or gets more out of hand is the best way to go.
