Paul Colon DPM, FACFAS featured in the Clayton Magazine Health 2013 edition.
Dr. Colon is a well known board certified podiatrist and founder of American Foot & Leg Specialists. What his patients may not be aware of is his involvement with Governor’s Glen, a memory impaired assisted living community located in the south Atlanta metro area in Forest Park.
Millie Michaels, Dr. Colon’s mother, was a major influence in Dr. Colon’s life. He feels she is what made him the successful person he is today. She always inspired him to pursue his dreams.
Millie was a very devoted wife and mother and when her husband became ill, she insisted on caring for him at home. He eventually succumbed to pancreatic cancer and it took a tremendous toll on her. Her memory began to fail and she became very forgetful. In 1991 Millie was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Colon then threw himself into the study of Alzheimer’s and eventually built and opened Governor’s Glen, a memory impaired assisted living home built on seven acres close to his podiatry center.
Governor’s Glen is a beautiful place that has the look and feel of a home with an inviting front porch complete with rocking chairs, ferns hanging from the ceiling, a running fountain with fish, a gazebo, and a short walking trail. Residents have their meals prepared by a true southern chef, entertained and cared for by a loving staff. Music can often be heard throughout the hallways and residents are encouraged to join in using their own instruments.
Dr. Colon’s mother never got to live in Governor’s Glen. She passed away in 1997 before the home was completed. But, Dr. Colon said it is her legacy. He built it with her in mind to be a place where the one purpose is to improve the quality of life for residents through socialization and stimulation of the body and mind.
