Can Cold Weather Affect Your Feet?

Everyone knows that it is important to dress warmly with a few layers when temperatures start to drop. However, it is not only your hands, face and core that needs protection from cold weather conditions like frigid winds, colder air and snow when you go outside – your feet also need protection from the cold weather conditions.

In severe cases, overexposure to harsh temperatures can lead to frostbite and hypothermia. Humid air can also trap moisture into your shoes that may cause fungal infections or blistering. As well, indoor heat that is too dry can lead to bleeding and cracked skin. Clearly, cold weather and feet are not always a good pairing.

Keep Warm and Dry

Generally, tennis shoes are just fine if you are just going from your house to the car. On the other hand, if you spend significant time outdoors in the cold you need extra foot protection, especially if there is snow on the ground. The best types of shoes should keep your feet warm and dry such as insulated waterproof leather boots. In addition, you shoes need to be breathable. Thicker socks or double layers are also helpful. Wool socks are a great insulator and absorb moisture effectually.

Dryness

Wet and cold weather are not the only winter conditions that can create problems with your feet. According to WebMD, cold weather combined with low humidity and hot houses can play havoc on your skin. Dry heat from internal heating systems can rob the feet of moisture, leading to fissures and cracked skin. In addition, if you have other health conditions, dry feet can make matters worse. For instance, cracks can easily become infected if not taken care, which can be a big health concern for diabetics.

Because your feet do not have oil glands like the rest of your skin, it is important to moisturize them daily with lotion or creams (like coconut oil). The most critical time to apply lotion is after a bath or shower. Staying hydrated and a balanced diet is also a great preventative measure for dry skin.
