Dr. Loren Colon is conducting a study on the effectiveness of PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) therapy for plantar fasciitis. The study was performed at American Foot and Leg Specialists located in Forest Park just south of Atlanta.
This treatment is recommended by the doctors at American Foot and Leg Specialists of Atlanta for patients’ injuries and disorders of the foot and ankle as a non-surgical method for reducing or eliminating pain in the area injured. Most common foot problems treated by PRP therapy are plantar fasciitis or Achilles injuries such as tendonitis. However, in this study. Dr. Loren only focused on the effects of PRP therapy for those suffering from plantar faciitis.
Preliminary results show that 35 out of 41 patients (85%), who were polled after 1 year of the PRP therapy, experienced having no pain or substantially reduced pain in the area treated for plantar faciitis. Dr. Loren Colon will continue polling these patients, who are a part of this research study, for an additional year to determine the long term effectiveness of the PRP therapy.
The PRP therapy is performed by first removing a small amount of blood from the patient. That blood is then spun in a centrifuge that will cause the blood cells to separate into red blood cells, platelet poor plasma, and platelet rich plasma. Only the platelet rich plasma will be used in the treatment. Once it is separated, the platelet rich plasma is shaken to redistribute the platelets within the plasma. This concentrated solution, which is all composed of platelet rich plasma provided by the patient, is then injected into that patient. An ultrasound machine is used to guide the injection to the injured area of the foot or ankle.
It has been thought by physicians that injections of platelet rich plasma can help spur the body’s natural healing process for soft tissue and tendons. Dr. Loren Colon has experienced tremendous results with many of his patients who come from the Atlanta area, and felt that by doing this research study he could provide statistical results to other physicians considering offering PRP therapy to their patients.
Here are some remarks about PRP therapy from a few of Dr. Loren Colon’s patients:
July 18, 2014 – My tendons had small tears. The wonderful staff of American Foot and Leg Specialists treated me excellently. Dr. Loren Colon did a procedure called PRP. Within a 4-6 weeks’ time, I was up and going. It was the best procedure I could have done.
Thank you for all your good care.

My experience with Dr. Colon and the PRP therapy for my ruptured tendon in my ankle has been wonderful. The staff at American Foot & Leg is friendly and knowledgeable. My pain in my ankle is almost completely gone nine weeks after the PRP treatment. The MLS Laser therapy has also been very beneficial. I would recommend American Foot and Leg to anyone with foot and ankle pain. It has been a pleasure working with this group.
