Because today is diabetic peripheral neuropathy alert day here in Georgia, we wanted to take some time to discuss the condition with you. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is defined as nerve damage in the hands or feet. More than half of all the people affected by diabetes, who have elevated blood sugars and who have had the disease for years, have been known to have some form of nerve damage. Symptoms may include tingling, numbness, burning, or pain in your feet, legs, and hands.

If you are a diabetic, it is very important to visit your local podiatrist to be evaluated routinely to help prevent nerve damage. Annual foot exams are recommended for close monitoring of any injuries, sores, or any other abnormalities. A complete exam will also include checking your sensation and blood flow to prevent any potential problems in the future.

If you are experiencing any symptoms of peripheral neuropathy or if your podiatrist suspects nerve damage, test can be performed to see how well your nerves are working. Your podiatrist will help educate you on prevention and can be able to prevent the complications as a result to nerve damage.

Treatments for diabetic neuropathy include prescription medicines such as Lyrica, supplements that include thymine such as NeurRx, physical therapy, and laser treatments that can increase circulation to the affected extremity.
